Your guide to having the most complete LinkedIn profile
LinkedIn is changing almost every day. It is quickly becoming the go to resource for recruiters. In fact, over 90% of recruiters are using LinkedIn according to data from the Society of Human Resource Management. So if you haven’t updated your profile in quite some time, it may be time to give it a quick refresh.
What to include
There are certain things you absolutely want to include in your profile. Your education is one of them. When you include your education, you will appear more frequently in search terms. If you have professional pictures, it is best to use them as your profile picture. This will also result in being found more frequently in search results. Make sure your headline and short descriptions include words that you want to be found for such as Marketing Director or IT Specialist.
Be Active On It
Many people mistake LinkedIn as simple a place to have a profile and that’s it. However, LinkedIn is a social network. Which means you have to be social to network. Share some articles. Congratulate people on their new jobs. Comment on other people’s updates. Make sure to interact with others just like you would on Facebook or Instagram, but professionally. This is a place to share professional interests not your most recent vacation photos.
Show Yourself
Your writing style gives you many opportunities to show exactly who you are and how you would be a perfect fit for a company. If you want to work for a young and hip coffee company, make sure your writing in your description uses words that they would use. If you want to work for a big professional corporation, make sure to use language that they would likely use as well.
Keep it up to date
Keeping your profile recent will go a long way in showing recruiters that you are serious about finding the right position. Having an inactive profile does not show a recruiter that you are currently searching for a new position or in the market for a new career. Add profile items such as recent projects, websites, and results to keep your profile fresh.
Do your research
Look at some other profiles that are similar to yours and see what they have or don’t have that your profile does. Also take a look at some of the job postings on LinkedIn and see what skills or keywords they are using to find the ideal position you are looking for. This will help you add to your own skills and writing your descriptions.
